How did Motherdough begin?

Motherdough started during the Covid pandemic when we came to the aid of 1000s of bakers across South Africa. We sold sourdough starters and created a supported community of people learning to bake real bread at home. We also provided a tools and ingredients from our online store. Our course program started during level 3 lockdown and continues to this day.

As the world recovered from Covid the dynamics of our business changed; people went back to work = less time at home and Eskom ramped up loadshedding. This meant the demand for home-baker products and service dropped significantly and the demand for a baked product became strong.

We opened our 100% natural fermentation bakery in Franschhoek in Nov 2023.
